Driftless Area

No more than 1/4 of an inch last night in Viroqua means that streams south of HWY 56 will still have a better chance of being fishable (and we do have a handful of streams that were already running clear yesterday). North of 56 (West Fork, Timber Coulee) is ugly and streams are muddy. There is a chance that the tributary waters will drop and start to clear today however. There is no rain to speak of in the area today, just some wind blowing in some cold weather. So the weekend outlook is fantastic, stained water, cool weather, and high water from recent rains! Remember this is the last weekend of season (Wisconsin trout season closes September 30th at 11:59 pm).
Fishing has been strong on terrestrials in darker colors with small thin bodied nymphs and midge larvae dropped below them 2-3 feet. Olives have been sporadic, but you can find some feeding fish, especially in the afternoons, on some streams. A good olive emerger will catch them.
Do not forget scuds after a rain, many scuds are being flushed through the system as you read this, and fish are gorging themselves.
The colder water and aggressive fish means that a leech twitched along the edges, or a streamer fished deep in a hole will get aggressive fish to eat.
